Kontra Kommando and Gokuma
Help for people new to Doom and playing custom mods or maps or wads or pk3's:
You need three things: a version of this mod itself, a compatible Doom source port, and Doom2.wad from the original game.
Doomshack is also a helpful resource besides these instructions.
So first, you need the doom2.wad or freedoom2.wad should be alright though doom2.wad is preferable.
If you get the Doom 1+2 on GOG or Steam, that should include the original versions of the games to take the doom2.wad from.
It's often on sale for about $4.
Make a custom doom folder somewhere. Copy doom2.wad to there or GZDoom might automatically find your doom2.wad from whatever installation.
Next you need a source port.
The normal version of this mod was designed for GZDoom.
Not required but after you install that, I recommend the older 4.10 Windows 64 bit version from their archive.
Overwrite whatever files of the latest version with that. 4.10 has more sector lighting modes in Display Options, Hardware Renderer, before they deleted them in 4.11.
If GZDoom runs kinda slow on your computer, there's also LZDoom on the downloads page which is based on an older version and runs better.
Or was based on an older version. Seems to be updated recently but attention is probably still given to better performance.
Or there's Zandronum which runs best on slower computers and has better multiplayer, weapon switching options, and taunts for player skins.
Unfortunately in Zandronum, map01 and map40 versions of Camp Crystal Lake currently suffer from some overloaded enemy sight/distance check in Zandronum in two cabins (so they're marked with translucent floating skulls and you don't need to go in them). Also encountered problem in map06 Kill For Mother but it's less troublesome and you're Jason with tons of life. On NES you have to light all seven fireplaces to obtain the flashlight. In Jason's Doom it only requires six on map01/40/06. Lighting fireplaces also brightens the Cave area, and it's plenty bright after lighting six.
*LZDoom or Zandronum must run with this mod in hardware mode!*
Then you just download the Jason's Doom mod and put it in the Doom folder you installed whatever source ports, copied Doom2.wad, and whatever pk3 and wad of this mod.
Run Friday13.bat
Or edit Friday13.bat in notepad to change from gzdoom to another port or add additional mods, or remove altcolor.wad to play with classic NES color Jason.
Or use a Launcher program such as Doomseeker or others to set up your game with whatever port and mods/wads/pk3's.
Can play on android phone with Delta Touch (available in appstore for a few bucks)
Friday the 13th: Jason's Doom Tips and Information
Now if you want some enhancement mods, there's 13xtramods.zip
Copy the contents of that zip into your custom Doom folder.
Just double click whatever .bat for the version you want to run. Use notepad to open a .bat file and you can edit a more custom combination of which mods you like, editing out the ones you don't want to use. Not all of the mods are compatible with Zandronum, but the .bat for Zandronum runs with all the ones that are.
When you go into the options menu in GZDoom, always select Full Options Menu, or else a lot will be hidden, even in submenus (Ridiculous huh?)
With Full Options visible go into these settings or press F5 for a shortcut to them:
Display Options, Hardware Renderer.
Once there set
Adjust Sprite Clipping = Smarter or Always
Then sprites won't be cut off by the ground so much in hardware mode.
And also there you'll see Sector Light Mode.
There's many good choices.
This mod was designed for "Vanilla", but all sectors are fullbright if playing in Delta Touch.
I think "Build" looks best but it's too dark for some maps.
"Dark" is good and surprisely not as dark as "Build."
Zandronum has neither of those light modes so "Standard" or "Legacy" are the next closest.
"Doom" is a good choice.
Under Display Options, Texture Options, you see texture filtering set to trilinear by default.
Change that to just plain "none" for crisp graphics rather than totally blurred crap.
In HUD options, Scaling Options, it's good to crank Messages up to 8, and increase User Interface Scale as well.
More recommended key bindings if you press the ~ or ` on your keyboard to bring up the console:
bind F4 menu_sound
bind F8 Menu_player
In Classic Doom F4 always was the sound menu so you can quickly adjust sound effects and music volume individually.
F8 always was for turning messages on/off. I'd rather leave them on all the time and have a shortcut to player setup.
Next go to these options (Zandronum only):
Player Setup, Weapon Setup.
And set
Switch Without Ammo = NO
So when you throw your last pipebomb, it goes to the detonator,
instead of a different weapon.
Now when playing the game, besides your automap with tab, F1 brings up the map from the NES game, though it's only applicable to map01/40/06
Another thing but only in single player, enter these in the console:
puke 104
and it will tell Jason's current location.
puke 105
will tell what day it is.
Those are applicable to any map.
And then on map01/40, 06, 04, 11, many strategies for acquiring things or triggering things work the same as the 8-bit Nintendo. Our day cycle is time-based rather than changed by going in so many cabins. The next phase of Voorhees also can come back as sunset changes to night so you don't have to wait until the next day. There's also a secret way to piss off Jason and make him come back to life immediately once per the level.
3/16/24 GokWeap5 or Strife Turbo Champion Edition!
2/18/24 Strango5 - Dwango5 converted to Strife plus more maps: 04, 26, and 27/37 by me plus other edits such as map29
Other Contributions by Gokuma:
Polytope's Haunter of the Dark - map05 Witch House and some textures (not released yet)
1/17/21 Whirledtsar's Realms of Cronos for Hexen - Guillotine of the Gods map
Main centerpiece of level inspired by the Danzig song, "How the Gods Kill." I imagined how.
